Throughout America there are certain staples one can find while walking the halls of a college dormitory. From the mundane to the ridiculous, the dorm rooms of college students are incredibly predictable. Below is a list of the twelve of the most common examples of horribly cliché dorm room decorum
Beer Bottle Collection
One way that college students show their newly acquired adult tastes for all things cultured, is by placing them on display for the rest of the world to view. This can include literature, music, art, and a well-thought out beer collection. A favorite among dorm rooms, this collection shows the world that, 1) You drink and; 2) You drink a lot.
Bricks and Plywood Shelving Unit
Coming up with a creative use for otherwise uncreative, inanimate objects is a favorite pastime among college students. Especially when it is done on the cheap. Take for instance, a couple of bricks and some plywood. Add some basic stacking, and you have a shelving unit, useful for either electronics, books or a beer bottle collection (see aforementioned).
Micro-Fridge-Vision
Because dorm rooms are typically smaller than the average bedroom, students must stack electronics on top of each other. Regardless of the amount of radiation a stack like this emits, students prefer to consolidate their major appliances, to give off the appearance that they operate as one amazing autonomous unit. Just think, one day an entrepreneur will create the refrigerator+ television+microwave combo and cash in on this industrious idea. But until then, people will continue dangerously retrofitting appliances and overwhelming power outlets in the above fashion.
Beer Pong Paraphernalia
Beer-pong is spreading faster on college dorms and campuses than ever before. And, eventually it will be recognized as a sport on ESPN 2,. But until then, it will continue be something associated with the undergraduate experience. Whether it is a trophy from a previous tourney, or a custom built tournament-size table, most undergrads tend to include once piece of bedroom flair that communicates to their peers that they ‘pong. And for good reason.
Breakfast of Champions
MSG + Vitamin C + Cold Medicine = a very special goodness that can get a college student through just about anything. College students are known for their ingenuity, and ability to forage for sustenance – wherever they can find it. Typically, this equates to a combination of an instant soup cup and a highly concentrated dosage of Vitamin C. One can find this nutritious concoction in any college dorm room, usually next to the Adderall.
The 1970′s Wall Shrine
This type of collage is the most stereotypical of its kind in America. The person who this collage belongs to, likely came up with this arrangement premeditatedly. And chances are, their arrangement was inspired by the walls of an upperclassman, whom they looked up to. One might go so far to suggest that these posters were purchased as a ‘cool college poster starter kit’, if you will. In any event, it is so unabashedly formulaic, that it deserves mention.
Stack o’ Death
Unfortunately many students who attempt to stack their beds on their desks are not engineering students. And within weeks of stacking, tragedy can strike. It usually occurs when two people are in the bed, and things get a little hot and heavy. The next thing you know, the bed comes crashing down, monitors are breaking and underwear and posters start flying everywhere.
Grandma’s Quilt
The famous family quilt is often seen as a good luck charm. Unfortunately, the students who keep these on their beds don’t understand that they are an adults now and don’t have to listen to everything their mother says. For many it can help bring up good memories of nana, and not having to share a bathroom with thirty other people. In any case, these quilts are as ubiquitous as they are comfy.
Day Old Pizza
Having a day-old pizza box (with pizza) in the dorm room is so pervasive among college students, that it goes without saying. Whether the owners are collecting these boxes or they are just too busy (lazy) to clean up – they can be found in a majority of college dorm rooms across our great nation. Perhaps this helps in explaining the phenomenon of the ‘freshmen fifteen’.
XXX-Mas Dorm Lights
Once they reach college, a lot of students find themselves being romantic (in adult situations) for the first time. And, most students are on a fixed budget. The solution: X-Mas Lights. For some reason it is understood that these lights will not only brighten up the room, but they somehow will serve as mood lighting as well. Whether or not this is true, it is not uncommon to find these throughout American dorm rooms well into April.
The Beatles Poster
For some reason, everyone at college likes The Beatles. And as a result, most students have posters such as this one (above), or of the Abbey Road Album above their bed. It is perhaps the most perdictable bands for college students be fans of. It is rumored that some dorms actually come equipped with said posters, having been installed just before new students arrive each fall.

You can the remains of this “hilarious” prank in dormitories across the country. Typically, it is the brilliance of a freshman girls or a sorority. Unfortunately these girls sometimes forget they’re not in high school anymore. And, after a prank such as this, they soon find out how disgusting and over the top the freshman boys’ retaliation can be.
