Former U.S. Congressman Steve Gunderson was announced as the new president of the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities Monday.

APSCU, a membership organization, includes many of the for-profit and career schools in the United States, such as Kaplan Higher Education Corporation, Bridgepoint Education, Inc., which oversees Ashford University and College of the Rockies, Corinthian Colleges, which manages the Everest College system, DeVry, Inc., and Education Management Corporation, which owns the Arts Institutes, Argosy University and Brown Mackie College, among others. APSCU was formerly known as the Career College Association.

Gunderson served 16 years in the U.S. Congress from Wisconsin. He worked on policy as it related agriculture, education, employment policy, health care and human rights. After his service, Gunderson worked on the Council of Foundations creating new public-private partnerships.

He has also worked as a strategic planning and communications consultant, authored The Jobs Revolution: Changing How America Works, and lectured at campuses around the country.

“It is my privilege to join such a well-respected organization that is working every day to ensure more students can access the American Dream,” said Gunderson in a press release.

Gunderson said access to post-secondary education would have to expand to over the next decade. The private sector will have to play a role in that expansion since state and federal budgets face constraints, he added.

“Private sector colleges and universities play a central role in ensuring men and women can receive the skills and training they need to excel in the job market, while also balancing work and caring for their families.  I look forward to joining the academic leaders representing institutions that span our nation in the effort to prepare more Americans to excel and help move our country forward,” Gunderson said.
