The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) announced today it will hold a hearing to examine the use of Cal Grants to pay for online degrees for California residents.

Under current regulations participating Cal Grant institutions must have a physical presence in California. This requirement has ruled out online universities that do not have a corresponding physical campus.

CSAC’s announcement said the Feb. 23 and 24 hearing would examine lifting the physical presence requirements for the Cal Grants program and questions of quality that have been raised by critics. The hearing will “spotlight the issues for the public, provide informed advice to lawmakers,” the statement read.

CSAC oversees the distribution of more than $1 billion annually to California’s students.
