University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby announced Tuesday the formation of a task force to investigate how the university system’s schools and colleges are using technology in distance education and make recommendations for improving the services for students.

“The economic future of Georgia depends upon more Georgians completing some level of college education,” said Huckaby in a press release. “We have to make better use of our distance education resources and ramp up our efforts to help us meet state workforce needs.”

Southern Polytechnic State University President Lisa Rossbacher will lead the new Distance Education Task Force created by Huckaby.

Task force members will work with Jon Sizemore, recently appointed interim assistant vice chancellor for Distance Education, and others in the system with expertise in the areas of distance education, academic programming and delivery and information technology.

Rossbacher said the group would idenify goals for distance education that — once implemented — would advance the Complete College Georgia effort, which calls for the state’s public and private colleges, universities and technical colleges to increase the number of Georgians with some level of college completion from a current level of 42 percent to 60 percent by 2020.

“This is an exciting opportunity to work together as a system to develop a broad statewide plan for how we use technology in the classroom,” said Rossbacher.
