The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard combined its online education platform efforts to create edX. Both schools committed $30 million each to the program, which will give students from any participating university or organization access to the educational content the two schools provide on the site.

EdX just received an extra boost for its endeavors when Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates, donated, on behalf of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, $1 million to the program yesterday.

The grant will benefit the efforts to create a free prototype computer science online course through edX and will partner with a post-secondary institution that targets low-income, young adults to experiment with use of the course in a “flipped classroom” where lectures take place outside the classroom and homework is done in class, according to MIT’s website.
