Since launching early this year, OpenStax College, an online textbook publisher, reported 13,000 free textbooks downloaded from the site, according to an eCampus News report. Richard Baranuik, founder of the startup edtech, said the savings from the spring semester accumulated to $1 million for the students of Rice University.
The report also stated that 55 colleges will begin using the online textbook publisher as a textbook option for students this fall.
OpenStax College is funded by several foundations including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the 20 Million Minds Foundation.
