The University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business will be offering the university’s first massive open online course (MOOC) in January 2013. The course, entitled “Grow to Greatness: Smart Growth for Private Businesses” is being offered as part of the university’s partnership with Coursera.

The course grew out of research, led by UVa professor Ed Hess and funded by Darden’s Batten Institute, examining the expansion challenges of 54 high-growth private businesses in 23 states. Hess’ research showed that as private businesses grow they face a common set of management challenges created by that growth.

Hess has designed the course to assist students, and business professionals, understand and address growth related challenges which, he said, will allow companies to create jobs and “have a positive impact in their societies.”

Since the course was announced in mid-July 15,700 people have registered, even though the first of the two sequential segments offered by Coursera doesn’t start until January 28, 2013.
