Cheating can be a serious problem in school and one many struggle with, whether you are on the receiving end of someone trying to cheat off your paper/exam, or trying to cheat yourself. In recognizing the latter, trying to cheat, it’s important to try identifying what led you to this act of deceit and desperation because ultimately you will probably get caught. You are also not learning anything and that will eventually catch up with you as well. So, it’s crucial to determine what brought you to this point and how you can redeem the situation.

First of all, is the class simply too hard for you and you need to switch out or go down a level? This could be a simple solution of speaking with your advisor or teacher in helping discover what it is you need. Maybe Spanish is not the foreign language for you but Latin is a much better fit. Maybe Advanced Algebra is too difficult for you now and you need to drop down to the average level math class. Whatever you discern, either through your own self-exploration or with the help of professionals, it’s vital you surpass the damaging desire to cheat and avoid this act as best as possible.

If you are caught cheating there can be grave consequences. Trust first and foremost is lost between your teacher and likely your peers. Classmates may have studied very hard or worked long hours on a paper that you brazenly cheated on to get by. You will have a suspicious quality until you are able to proof yourself and show you are an honest student once again. Another consequence is failing the class and in some school, the punishment may be even more severe and irrevocable.

Catching someone cheating is a tricky situation and it’s hard to reach a decision on what to do. If someone is cheating off your paper or exam you will probably feel betrayed and want to turn in the cheater. If it is a friend and you are allowing the cheat, be very mindful you are an accomplice and will likely face the same punishment as the one cheating. Don’t be fooled in thinking you are an innocent bystander. If you naively witness someone cheating off someone else, then comes the tough choice of reporting it or not. The decision is up to you although you could confront both parties and let them know what you saw, leaving it in their hands to confess or let it go.

Going to a 4 year college right out of high school isn’t the only option available to high school graduates. There are many alternative options to this traditional, standard choice and it’s important to explore all the sufficient substitutions before making the right decision for you.

Community colleges can be a great transition before applying to bigger, better schools you may not be ready for financially or academically. Community colleges are much more affordable, yet offer similar courses and can prepare a student for college life at a more difficult institution in the future. Many people opt for community colleges if they have obligations at home that might keep them from going away and such circumstances may only be temporary, so it’s a great way to bridge the gap before you are ready to apply to your "wish list" of schools. Community colleges do not offer housing, so it’s imperative that you choose one that is within commuting distance or you have someone with whom you can stay.

Going to school part-time (evening classes) while working full-time is also an option to explore if money is an issue. You can search colleges that offer classes at unconventional times such as nights and weekends. This is a great way of attending the college you want to attend, but not in the regular setting of being a day-time student. Your day-time hours can then be used for earning an income that may be used to pay for the classes or saved for possibly attending full-time in the future. Whatever the case, there is an option out there for you, just be diligent in exploring your options, knowing your needs, trusting your instincts and not being pressured by what everyone else is doing. There are many college options that are still a brilliant alternative and will offer just as much benefit as going away to a 4-year school.

Make sure you visit your high school guidance counselor to discuss these alternative options and ask for as much information as you can on colleges that offer night/weekend classes as well as community colleges. Ask if there are any recent graduates you could contact who are taking a less conventional route and see if you could speak with them about their experience. Talk to your parents about what’s best for the family and make sure they know what you want to do, but are also aware of the sacrifices you are willing to make if you have to.

When you’re in college, you’ll spend a lot of your time learning specific things related to your area of study. Of course, while you’re doing that, you’re also learning important life skills along the way. These skills will serve you in your career and life in general, whether you realize it or not. Here are some of the most useful skills you’ll learn while you’re in college.

Time management is key in college. You’ve got to juggle sleep, a social calendar, assignments, and classes all at once. As professors pile on essay after essay and exams that seem to all cluster together, it can be overwhelming, but somehow, college students figure out a way to make it all work. It’s stressful and you probably hate it, but college won’t be the last time this happens. You’ll almost certainly have times when you’re overloaded at work or at home, and when that happens, you’ll be able to rely on the time management skills you’ve picked up while you’re in school.

One of the most valuable skills you’ll learn in college is communication. Whether you’re talking to a professor, classmate, or just friends, you’re going to be doing a lot of listening and speaking in college. Lectures will teach you how to find the most valuable parts of what someone is saying. Group work will help you learn how to politely and effectively discuss subjects with others. You will probably have to give presentations in your college career, and those will help you get a handle on public speaking, which is important for many different career fields and life in general. Even the emails you send back and forth are training you to be an effective communicator now and in the future.

You’ll learn how to learn. It sounds silly, but college will train you to teach yourself and find information easily. All of your time spent reading, researching, and Googling will pay off when college is over. When you’re done with college, you’ll have perfected the skill of finding and processing information, which is especially useful in working environments.

You may not realize it, but the work you’ve doing in college helps you build skills for the future every day. Enjoy the lessons of time management, communication, learning, and more while you’re in college.

How much do you know about our nation’s leaders? Take our quiz to learn more about some of the longest-running congressmen of the twentieth century.

Questions

This U.S. senator was elected in 1973 as the sixth-youngest senator and represented his state until just recently, when he received a worthy promotion during a historical election.

When this senator passed away, many Americans felt that it was the end of an era — or dynasty — for a prominent U.S. family with a strong liberal background.

Sometimes called "Mr. Sam," this Texas congressman was also the longest running Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, when he was appointed in 1940 at the age of 58.

This Democratic senator is continuing a family tradition of serving in Congress, and is currently the senior senator and the longest running member in congressional history. He is also third in line to succeed the president.

As a governor, former Presidential candidate, and long-time U.S. senator, this controversial, conservative politician supported segregation at one point, and even conducted a 24-hour filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

This San Antonio native lost the Senate race to replace Lyndon B. Johnson, but won a special election a few months later, and stayed in the Senate for over 37 years.

This man is the longest-serving Republican senator in congressional history. He served Alaska in the Senate, until a major ethics scandal involving financial disclosure forms caused him to lose his seat in 2008.

After the death of Ted Kennedy, this senator became the second senior senator in Washington. He has represented his home in Congress since it became a state in 1959, and in the Senate since 1963.

Besides being a long-running U.S. senator, this man was once named by Time magazine as the "most eligible bachelor" in the Senate. He has served in Congress since 1940, first in the House of Representatives, and then in the Senate, and twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination.

This Florida Republican has served in the House of Representatives since 1971, making him the longest-serving Republican in Congress at present.

Answers

Joe Biden: Vice-President Joe Biden was a U.S. senator from Delaware 1973-2009, making him the 14th-longest serving senator in history.

Ted Kennedy: Edward M. Kennedy past away in 2009 while serving as the second most senior member of the Senate, in which he had served since 1962. Kennedy, brother of Robert F. and John F. Kennedy, ran for the Democratic candidacy for president in 1980 but lost, most probably because of his car accident scandal resulting in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne.

Sam Rayburn: Sam Rayburn was elected to the House of Representatives in 1913, when he was 31. Rayburn served for over 48 years and was one of the first congressmen to refuse to affect payment or gifts from public service corporations.

Robert Byrd: Robert Byrd was named the President pro tempore for the Senate in 2007, making him third in line to replace the President. The former KKK member was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1952 and to the Senate in 1958.

Strom Thurmond: Strom Thurmond was the longest running senator in history until Robert Byrd beat his record. He is still the only senator to reach the age of 100 while in office.

Henry B. Gonzalez: Gonzalez was a Democratic senator who served as chair for the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations to investigate the deaths of JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Ted Stevens: Ted Stevens was elected to the Senate in 1968. He is the longest-serving senator to lose a re-election bid.

Daniel Inouye: Daniel Inouye is also the first Japanese-American to serve in the House of Representatives and in Congress, and has a Medal of Honor for his service during WWII.

Henry M. Jackson: Jackson did not serve an uninterrupted term in Congress: when the U.S. entered WWII, he enlisted in the Army. He returned on orders from FDR, but he did visit the Buchenwald concentration camp and was elected president of the International Maritime Conference in 1946.

Bill Young: Bill Young has been reelected 20 times and served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations for six years, from 1999-2005.
