Online Business Management Degree Overview

An associate degree in business management or business administration can provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to work as an HR or administrative assistant. Higher-level management jobs in business typically require a bachelor’s degree and often require some form of relevant career experience. Since many students work while they earn their online business management degrees/business administration degrees, they often have an advantage over recent business graduates who may have less work experience.

Online master’s in business administration (MBA) degrees allow for quicker advancement in the business world and open up opportunities for higher-level positions. Many business leadership positions do not require an MBA, but if you have a two-year or four-year online business degree, you may require several years of relevant experience to compete with MBA degree-holders for high-level jobs.

Degree Avg Degree Cost Avg Loan Default Rate Time Commitment Early Career Pay Mid-Career Pay Unemployment Rate
Associate $12,824 15.7% 2 years $45,600 $51,000 7%
Bachelor's $17,700 10.3% 4 years $41,000 $69,000 4.5%
Master's $19,104 8.5% 1+ years $64,000 $92,000 3.9%
Whether you are new to the field, or looking to advance in your current career, you should weigh the costs and time of getting a new degree against its benefits. There is no one-size-fits-all degree. The best choice for you will depend on your current educational background, financial standing, employment history, and area of interest. For instance, those with no experience may want to consider an associate degree, due to its shorter time commitment and lower cost. If finances are tight for you, then you should prioritize the student loan debt and default categories, as you will want to choose a degree that offers you the best chance of improving your financial standing with minimal risk. If your employer or someone else is paying for your education, then you might want to consider the degree that will offer you the highest salary. All salary information is sourced from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and/or PayScale

Why did you decide to pursue your business administration degree online?

I chose to pursue my business administration degree online because it offered me the ability to complete the degree I had already begun at a traditional brick-and-mortar university. It also provided me the flexibility to attend from my somewhat remote location, as the nearest university is almost two hours away. I chose business administration because it is one of the most widely accepted bachelor’s degrees across many fields of employment, allowing me more freedom in terms of the sector of business I can work in.

What are the advantages of earning a degree online?

The greatest advantage of an online degree is the flexibility it provides one's schedule. My schedule needed maximum flexibility when I started my degree completion because I had just gotten married, and over the course of my classwork my wife and I welcomed our first child. In addition, an online program allows individuals to learn at their own pace and not be tied to a certain academic timeline.

What did you find most challenging about the online format?

The most difficult aspect of online learning for myself was the initial venture back into the online environment, but that faded quickly and I realized that I excelled within the online structure.

Do you feel that an online degree prepared you for your career in the same way that an on-campus program would?

I absolutely agree that an online degree prepared me for my career in the same manner as a brick-and-mortar university. I have had the luxury of attending both types of universities and believe that there is no difference. One really strong argument for online education preparing someone for their career is that you learn to communicate strongly over digital means. In today's world, most of our communication in the work setting is over the phone, email, video calling, or some form of digital communication. Digital communication is exactly what an online program hinges itself upon.

What advice would you give students who plan on earning a business administration/business management degree online?

Don't delay starting your degree, and take a broad range of classes for your electives. Business administration is a broad degree in itself, and opening your knowledge even further only aides your learning in the required coursework. Commit time every day to be 100% committed to your studies. Find a comfortable place to do your work, with the upside being you can work anywhere you wish!

Six Sigma

Six Sigma certification is offered through an employee’s company. It provides training and assessment to test competencies in different business areas. Depending on which Six Sigma package your company purchases and the number of training courses/assessments you complete, you can become certified as a Green Belt, Black Belt, or Master Black Belt. Each of these certifications demonstrates your expertise in certain areas of business.
