Academic journals are one of the pricier aspects that draws college tuition up, solely because most of those journals are costly for schools to maintain memberships to. Many students of online college programs have opted for the less expensive free academic journals which are offered around the internet, if you know where to look. Wide arrays of subject matter are readily available for each subject, ranging from the sciences to law.

While there are many prestigious journals that cost hundreds of dollars in order to simply view one article, there are others that are published by similar Ivy League institutions such as Columbia, Northwestern, and Harvard that offer the user similar research for no cost at all. The Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal is a “professional-level, open-access science journal that is committed to publishing manuscripts of the highest scholarship resulting from significant scientific research or outstanding scientific analysis.” Therefore, many students in the science fields can look up recent research papers or other revolutionary research grants that have recently been performed and can help them in their own fields. This free academic journal allows science majors from around the world to have access to the same type of academia.

Additionally, there are other free academic journals that cater to a specific crowd of academics, such as those who are researching Victorian and Romantic art, which may lead them to RaVoN- Romanticism and Victorianism on the Net, an international refereed Electronic Journal that is dedicated to British 19th Literature. This is one of the few journals which has maintained its existence for over a decade, catering to its specific crowd while still maintaining itself as a free source of knowledge for the academic community. Whether you are a 19th century scholar, or just a curious passerby, this site allows everyone the opportunity to read another free academic journal in the arts.

Even graduate schools have their own free academic journals which cater to students who are furthering their education in law or medicine. The Duke Law Journal is another free journal which is available to law students who want to take a look at the legal issues of today. While most law schools provide their students access to many law journals from across the world, the Duke Law Journal allows students to keep updated about recent legal cases and other issues that may be infiltrating the law community for no cost at all.

These free academic journals are not only meant for those students who are attending an online college or distance learning, but can cater to a wide variety of individuals who are looking to further their knowledge about a specific subject. This is one way in which the internet has evolved to bring this type of free academic knowledge to many different types of individuals around the world.

Depending on what graduate school you intend to go to and what field you are planning to study, there are a myriad of different options for graduate school scholarships and grants. Science fields especially are strewn with graduate school scholarships in order to encourage a heightened enrollment within the field. While liberal arts graduate studies are more difficult to obtain scholarships in, it can still be done, and even graduate schools in the medical fields offer similar graduate scholarships.

Most public state schools offer a multitude of graduate school scholarships based on factors including your undergraduate GPA, extracurricular activities, and resume background. While private schools are a little less forthcoming with their graduate school scholarships, they are still an option if you have delivered yourself as a hardworking undergraduate student. Major state public schools such as the University of Texas or the University of Michigan offer graduate fellowships to their students based both on merit (“top quality graduate students”) or diversity, in order to promote a diverse graduate student body. These schools therefore offer students different options for aid through these fellowships since students can accept scholarships or additionally accept a teacher’s aid position which many graduate students agree to do in order to pay for school. TA’s are one of the best ways to both receive an unconventional scholarship and still obtain valuable experience within your field.

Other graduate school scholarships for smaller universities offer students the opportunity to complete research throughout their undergraduate education which can help promote the possibility of funding throughout their graduate school career. For example, in the science field, many undergraduate chemistry and biology majors have the opportunity to work summers at either their university or another science-oriented university, establishing the beginnings of research which they can later continue in graduate school. As a result, many of these schools will offer these students graduate school scholarships in order to further fund their research and allow the students to continue their education free from the extra burden of educational expenses. The science field is one of the only fields that offers this type of unique experience so that many graduate students simply have to focus on the burden of research, rather than the burden of student loans.

Liberal arts graduate students typically do not have the same opportunities as science graduate students have, but they are still offered a multitude of different graduate school scholarships from different universities based on different criterion. Many schools offer the same types of stipends to humanities students as they offer to science students which only increases the appeal of the school and encourages more research funding by foundations. While mostly Ph.D. students qualify for tuition waivers and stipends, students who are simply receiving a Masters Degree can additionally qualify if they prove themselves throughout undergraduate school as a dedicated research student. Different from many undergraduate scholarships which require students to complete essays or establish themselves as a multilevel student, your undergraduate career becomes the most important determination of graduate school scholarships. As long as you determine that you want to continue your studies after undergraduate work, you
can begin mapping out your remaining years and complete early forms of research in order to establish yourself as a qualified researcher in your field.

As a military spouse, you are well-trained to deal with news of tragedy or disaster, news that your spouse will be unable to communicate with you for weeks on end or will be deployed overseas for months on end. While this may set your nerves constantly on end, this type of worry comes with benefits of its own. Most military branches of our country, including the US Army, Marine Corps, and Navy offer spouses nearly equal benefits as they offer to the enlisted officer. While salary bonuses are part of these benefits, educational opportunities also fall into this category, and learning how to receive college grants for military spouses is an important piece of information to look into.

The U.S. Army offers equal educational benefits to its members and to their spouses as an inducement to attend college, offering to pay for college or pay off student loans. One such college grant for military spouses is the tuition assistance program which allows you to take classes on your own time that are related to your job. All active duty officers qualify for this program, which extends to their spouses. Additionally, the Post 9/11 GI Bill provides financial aid for education to soldiers with at least 90 days of total service on or after September 11, 2001, including those soldiers who were discharged due to disability after 30 days. This type of aid additionally extends to the spouses of these soldiers. The Army also offers an extended form of college grants to military spouses within their website, which indicates the many routes spouses can take in order to secure an education while they are separated from their loved ones. Army Emergency Relief is one forum in which both stateside and overseas spouses are eligible for grants, even stating that “all AER scholarships are grants”. The Army has therefore established itself as one of the better venues in which to find college grants for military spouses.

Many other military sects of the government offer similar programs to spouses around the country, including the State National Guard Tuition Assistance Programs. Each state in the National Guard offers different forms of college grants for military spouses, although there is some form offered for each state. Additionally, there are privately funded grants available for military families in order to encourage them to further their education. The Navy-marine Corps Relief Society caters exclusively to the families of Navy and Marine Corps members, providing a source of educational funding and financing. Their website in particular includes links to various other private scholarships for military families which can help the education process. There are a slew of additional grants for military spouses and scholarships which can help spouses cope with the long months of alone time and do something good with their lives while they wait for their spouse to return from overseas. Milspouse.org is one site which lists nearly every scholarship and grant that is available for military spouses regardless of what type of military their spouse is a part of. Understanding educational opportunities is important for everyone, but understanding these benefits that come with military service allows something good to come out of an unfortunate circumstance.

The college application process has always been about getting into college, but with the rising cost of tuition, it has become more and more about discovering a way to pay for it. Scholarships and grants are put into place to help you on this journey, although recently more traditional scholarships have been pushed to the side in the wake of newer, weird scholarships which allow participants of different heights, races, genders, and even hair colors to compete against each other in hopes of retaining funds for college.

These scholarships have emerged over the past few years as an alternative for those students who do not qualify for merit-based scholarships or athletic scholarships, but still need aid for college. Weird scholarships additionally provide participants with a fun method in which to apply and do not necessarily require applicants to write a 400-500 word essay in which they describe their hopes and dreams. There is plenty of time for writing in college, which is why these scholarships provide a fun outlet in return for weird scholarships.

Aside from scholarships that are based solely on appearances or backgrounds, there are also scholarships such as that from the Klingon Language Institute, which is meant to attract the Star Trek fans who are in the field of language study (not including Klingon of course). There is also a scholarship for the candy lovers out there, sponsored by studies for confectionery technology, those delicious food items that are rich in sugar (just what any college student wants to major in!). Additionally, there is that scholarship which we have all read about since the beginning of our high school years which has since because a bigger part of preparing for prom than its founders could have ever hoped it would be: The Duct Brand Duct Tape Stuck on Prom Contest has been around for the past eight years, and just going to their website demonstrates the creativity which many of these applicants have displayed over the years. From the King and Queen of Spades to Victorian-Era costumes, these applicants have revealed that these scholarships attract a wide calling of students around the country. No scholarship is too small to partake in, especially those scholarships which require students to participate in something different than what they are used to.

Scholarships are a vital part of the college acceptance route and many students have relied on websites such as Fastweb to secure the weird scholarships and those that are more obscure than the Gates Millennium Scholarship. Weird scholarships offer students the opportunity to seemingly take a break from the stress of applying to schools and applying to scholarships and instead allows them to take a different route which can also lead to funds for college in an apparently unorthodox manner which may be just what they need.

College requires so much time and focus that any opportunity to test out of a subject should be readily sought after for any incoming student. College Clep Tests (College-Level Examination Program) are given to those students who have the knowledge necessary to test out of 34 different subjects when they immediately get to college so that they can save time (and money) in the long run.

College clep tests simply allow you to put the knowledge you learned throughout high school (whether in English, Spanish, Math, etc.) and apply these to your undergraduate courses. If you were superb in one subject and know that the entry level class will simply be review, you might want to consider the Clep tests. The College Board (the same organization that is in charge of the Advanced Placement tests) are in charge of College Clep Tests and have indicated that you can earn up to 12 college credits by testing out of various subjects. Many of these entry level classes in college are meant for students who either never took the class in high school or forgot everything they learned. If you excelled in one specific field, there should be no reason why you should not pass out. Different language requirements may also allow you to test out of several semesters of a language. While some schools require as many as four semesters of a language, others may only require two, and this is an easy hurdle to get past within the clep tests.

College Clep Tests also provide another function in that they can help out those college seniors who are only a few credits short of graduation get past the finish line. If these were not an option for these students, many times they would have to wake a complete year in order to graduate from college because they are only three credits short of their degree. This seems to be a waste of time and money, and College Board took note of that and therefore allowed those students who only need introductory level classes the opportunity to graduate on time.

Furthermore, there are a myriad of individuals other than future and current college students who need to take clep tests in order to advance in life. Business professionals who need an extra degree and know the subject they are testing in can take a College Clep Test in order to further their career. Additionally, military service members can put clep tests toward their military education benefits in order to get the most out of their degree. The possibilities are nearly endless for this new type of test which College Board has created and will stand behind for years to come.

By Britney Wilkins

Apple’s iPhone application platform has made it easier than ever for hopeful software developers of all types to create a product and bring it to market. This system is unique, in that much of the marketing may be done for them – based on the popularity of the app – and all sales take place in this one centralized location. The net result for successful developers – or those entrepreneurs which team up with software designers – could be relatively easy money. Perhaps not surprisingly, this has resulted in many students producing their own applications in their spare time or, or others, have put their studies on hold. Below is a list of some of the more impressive iPhone applications created by college and university students.

Radio

Jen Pei Li, Raed Shomali, & Chaitanya Ramavajjala are graduate engineering students at USC that came up with the simple idea to allow iPhone users access to over 6300 radio stations worldwide for only $0.99. The application allows the user to search and listen to radio stations through directory and genre search from anywhere in the world. In the first month of Radio’s launch it was downloaded over 48,000 times which made the developers over $35,000. Since its release in 2008 it continues to be ranked in the top 100 applications.

Movies.app

Carnegie Melon sophomore Jeffery Grossman developed Movies.app to connect iPhone users to local theater information. Shortly after his application was downloaded over 250,000 times, he sold the rights to Flixter for a reportedly generous undisclosed amount. Furthermore, this is the first iPhone application to be developed independently and acquired by a larger company. As part of the deal between Flixter and Grossman, he has signed on with Flixter, where he will remain on as consultant while continuing to finish his higher education.

Air Gutar

Air Guitar provides the user the ability to rock on guitar without talent or commitment to play real guitar. The application was co-developed by Stanford University students James Anthony and Edward Marks. This was one of the first applications to be officially published from students who completed the university’s innovative iPhone development course. This application is currently available for download for $1.99. The app continues to be improved and updated, which has resulted in generally positive reviews from users.

Released in March 2009, it took only two weeks for this application to top the charts on the iTunes App Store. University juniors from Atlanta, Hayden Kramer and Wesley Miller, developed this software for people who love music and for those who aspire to be music producers. Studio App has become a top seller in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia. Its top ranking peaked at No. 6 on the "Top Music Application" list and was featured in the "New and Noteworthy" section of iTunes.
Throughout America there are certain staples one can find while walking the halls of a college dormitory. From the mundane to the ridiculous, the dorm rooms of college students are incredibly predictable. Below is a list of the twelve of the most common examples of horribly cliché dorm room decorum

Beer Bottle Collection

Source

One way that college students show their newly acquired adult tastes for all things cultured, is by placing them on display for the rest of the world to view. This can include literature, music, art, and a well-thought out beer collection. A favorite among dorm rooms, this collection shows the world that, 1) You drink and; 2) You drink a lot.

Bricks and Plywood Shelving Unit

Source

Coming up with a creative use for otherwise uncreative, inanimate objects is a favorite pastime among college students. Especially when it is done on the cheap. Take for instance, a couple of bricks and some plywood. Add some basic stacking, and you have a shelving unit, useful for either electronics, books or a beer bottle collection (see aforementioned).

Micro-Fridge-Vision

Because dorm rooms are typically smaller than the average bedroom, students must stack electronics on top of each other. Regardless of the amount of radiation a stack like this emits, students prefer to consolidate their major appliances, to give off the appearance that they operate as one amazing autonomous unit. Just think, one day an entrepreneur will create the refrigerator+ television+microwave combo and cash in on this industrious idea. But until then, people will continue dangerously retrofitting appliances and overwhelming power outlets in the above fashion.

Beer-pong is spreading faster on college dorms and campuses than ever before. And, eventually it will be recognized as a sport on ESPN 2,. But until then, it will continue be something associated with the undergraduate experience. Whether it is a trophy from a previous tourney, or a custom built tournament-size table, most undergrads tend to include once piece of bedroom flair that communicates to their peers that they ‘pong. And for good reason.

This type of collage is the most stereotypical of its kind in America. The person who this collage belongs to, likely came up with this arrangement premeditatedly. And chances are, their arrangement was inspired by the walls of an upperclassman, whom they looked up to. One might go so far to suggest that these posters were purchased as a ‘cool college poster starter kit’, if you will. In any event, it is so unabashedly formulaic, that it deserves mention.

Unfortunately many students who attempt to stack their beds on their desks are not engineering students.
The famous family quilt is often seen as a good luck charm. Unfortunately, the students who keep these on their beds don’t understand that they are an adults now and don’t have to listen to everything their mother says.
Having a day-old pizza box (with pizza) in the dorm room is so pervasive among college students, that it goes without saying. Whether the owners are collecting these boxes or they are just too busy (lazy) to clean up – they can be found in a majority of college dorm rooms across our great nation. Perhaps this helps in explaining the phenomenon of the ‘freshmen fifteen’.

Once they reach college, a lot of students find themselves being romantic (in adult situations) for the first time. And, most students are on a fixed budget. The solution: X-Mas Lights. For some reason it is understood that these lights will not only brighten up the room, but they somehow will serve as mood lighting as well. Whether or not this is true, it is not uncommon to find these throughout American dorm rooms well into April.

For some reason, everyone at college likes The Beatles. And as a result, most students have posters such as this one (above), or of the Abbey Road Album above their bed. It is perhaps the most perdictable bands for college students be fans of.
