Postsecondary Education in Connecticut

There are nearly 70 colleges and universities and over 100 postsecondary career schools authorized to grant degrees and certificates in the state.

Between 2013 and 2014, state funding per full-time student at all public schools increased 6.8%.

The average tuition prices during the same time frame increased 4.4%, making it the sixth highest increase in the nation.

In-state tuition prices for the 2014-15 school year at four-year, public schools averaged just over $10,000.

Out-of-state students for the same school year paid an average of roughly $27,000 for a year of education.

According to a recent NCES report, in fall 2012, 6.8% of students enrolled in Title IV institutions in Connecticut (14,701 students) were in exclusively online programs.

An Online Education at Charter Oak State College

Charter Oak State College's online program offerings include certificates, associate and bachelor's degrees, encompassing more than 300 online courses. All of their online courses are powered by Blackboard, a third party distance learning platform. All of the certificate and degree programs are fully online and do not require any onsite activities. Students are permitted to take classes as part-time, full-time or on a non-matriculated basis. Traditional fall and spring semesters run for 17 weeks. Students also have the option of completing coursework in accelerated five or eight week timeframes.

In addition to these programs, Charter Oak offers concentrations in 18 areas of study that can be completed exclusively online through COSC. They offer two dozen concentrations that can be completed through COSC in conjunction with other sources of credit. They also offer continuing education units (CEU) for teachers.

COSC is fully accredited through by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education. Charter Oak accepts other sources of credit including other accredited colleges and universities as well as standardized tests (CLEP and DANTES), military and corporate training that has been evaluated by ACE and the Connecticut Credit Assessment Program.

Online education opportunities at Sacred Heart University range from certificate programs to bachelor's and master's programs. Course schedules are designed to be flexible in order to accommodate student commitments and are available at any time. Enrolled students are assigned a services coordinator to assist them in a variety of their online education needs. SHU offers online students accelerated degree programs that enable students to take classes in as many of the six modules that make up the academic year.

An Online Education at Quinnipiac University

Quinnipiac University offers a full compliment of online programs, from certificates to doctorates. QU has more than a dozen programs that were created expressly for working adults. Online courses are presented via Blackboard and the university's own web-based course management system. Course participation is asynchronous, which allows students to participate on a schedule that is most convenient to them. The majority of Quinnipiac programs are fully online, although a few require an on-campus orientation. They use a semester based academic calendar with an additional January session and two summer sessions.

An Online Education at St. Vincent’s College

St. Vincent's College online has two bachelor's programs in health related fields, which can be completed entirely online. Students can choose from a course catalog of more than 50 online classes and five hybrid courses to obtain their degree. SVC requires potential distance learning students to complete the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium Self Assessment in order to determine readiness for online learning. St. Vincent's courses are delivered using Blackboard, Angel and Moodle. SVC's academic calendar is a combination of traditional semesters and six and eight week terms that enable students to take courses 12 months of the year if they wish.

An Online Education at University of Bridgeport

The University of Bridgeport offers online programs at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. Their programs include five bachelor's degrees and six master's. UB's online courses are delivered using Canvas, enabling student to access course materials and to communicate with instructors and peers 24 hours a day. All degree programs are fully online and do not require onsite visits to be completed.
