Georgia, like many southern states, has lead the charge in integrating and promoting online education at the postsecondary level. With initiatives like GeorgiaVIEW, GeorgiaONmyLINE and a number of state-sponsored online degrees, the state has proven itself to be remarkably innovative when it comes to pushing the boundaries of distance learning. Add to that its sterling membership in the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) and you have perhaps the top state to pursue a college education remotely.

Before we look at the best online colleges in GA for 2016, let’s investigate higher education in Georgia overall, as well as the organizations shaping online education in the state.

A Brief Overview of Higher Education in Georgia

In 2013, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that Georgia had 142 degree-granting institutions, broken down as follows: 61 public schools, 35 nonprofits and 46 for-profits. The total number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in the ’12-’13 school year at these schools was: 35,021 at public schools, 9,820 at private nonprofits and 2,813 at private for-profits.

The SREB reports that, as of 2012, 29% of adults between 25 and 64 hold at least a bachelor’s degree. The earnings gap between those with a bachelor’s in Georgia and those with only a high school diploma is $23,159. On the backs of such a gap, the state is currently working towards a goal of having 60% of its workforce hold some form of postsecondary credential by 2020.

Tuition-wise, the College Board reported that, in the ’15-’16 school year, the average in-state tuition and fees for four-year public schools was $8,450, while the out-of-state average was $25,310.

As for the state’s financial aid efforts, the National Association of State Student Grant & Aid Programs (NASSGAP) reported that Georgia awarded $569.9 million in nonneed grants for the ’13-’14 school year. Grants make up 20.4% of the state’s total fiscal support for higher education.

Altogether, Georgia maintains highly competitive tuition rates and dedicates a large portion of state funding to student grants. The state seems very much on track to significantly up its total number of degree holders.

The State of Online Higher Education in Georgia

According to the SREB online programs search tool, there are at least 330 online programs currently available in Georgia for the 2016 school year. Many of these are supported, in part, by GeorgiaONmyLINE.org. A service of the University System of Georgia, the site is a repository for the many online courses and fully online programs found at 29 of the state’s premier public institutions of higher learning. Such a service helps students find the right courses in the state, no matter where they are enrolled, and lets them quickly enroll. To get a sense of just how extensive the site’s selection is, refer to this regularly updated course chart.

Some programs offered by online colleges in GA are so sought after that they call for their own dedicated site. The Georgia WebMBA and WebBSIT are prime examples. These programs are unique in that they are offered by a collection of schools, meaning students enrolled can engage with professors, research and peers from any of the member institutions. Such programs may very well be the future of online higher learning.

As for the state’s involvement in the SREB, the compact lets students in Georgia sift through an impressive directory of online programs across the southeast U.S. SREB also has services like the Academic Common Market/Electronic Campus and the Regional Contract Program for Health Professions, which let students enroll in a selection of out-of-state programs while paying in-state rates.
