Postsecondary Education in Illinois

Those interested in pursuing their higher education in Illinois can choose from nine public universities and colleges, 48 community colleges, and 97 independent, nonprofit schools.

In the Fall of 2012, 54% of all full-time equivalent students enrolled in a two-year college and paid an average of $9,243 less on tuition than they would have at four-year public schools.

State funding between 2008 and 2014 decreased by 13.5%, and tuition prices increased by 22.7% in that same time frame.

Students residing in one of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) states may be eligible to receive a tuition discount at out-of-state schools through the Midwest Student Exchange Program.

An Online Education at Governors State University

GSU has fully embraced online learning by offering more than 120 online and hybrid classes each semester. The school utilizes the eLearning/Blackboard learning management system, which provides a free orientation course with video tutorials, Blackboard email help and GSU Help Desk phone support. For those completely new to online learning, there is a two credit hour, seven-week course that introduces Blackboard tools and critical internet skills. Every semester, students can register for online courses in everything from addiction studies to English. In an attempt to help students fund their education, GSU offers federal work-study programs, a long list of grants and scholarships and a FAFSA workshop to help students complete the financial aid application.
