Postsecondary Education in Maine

Between 2008 and 2014, the average tuition inflation-adjusted rate at four-year public schools in Maine rose 14%.

While local and state educational grants fell nationally between 2009-2012, Maine managed to increase grant spending per student by nearly 5%.

Tuition and fees at Maine’s public four-year institutions have basically remained the same since 2009, this is a major accomplishment by the legislature and the schools themselves as rates across the country rose an average of 17% over the same period.

Despite comparatively low tuition rates, Maine’s public colleges and universities saw only 31% enrollment gains between 2002-2012. During the same period, national college enrollment growth rates averaged at 37%.

According to a recent NCES report, in fall 2012, 13.4% of students enrolled in Title IV institutions in Maine (10,053 students) were in exclusively online programs.

The University of Maine Machias online program is comprised of bachelor's degrees and certificate programs that are conducted fully online.
