The Missouri Department of Higher Education estimates that by 2018, 60% of all jobs in the state will require some form of postsecondary credentials. However, as of 2013, only 37.6% of the state’s working adults held either an associate or bachelor’s degree. If you include people holding certificates, you now have 49% of your required pool of employees ― still far short of the anticipated employer needs.

This expected shortfall changed the focus of the state of Missouri to increasing higher education opportunities for its residents. Its initiative, formerly known as “Missouri’s Big Goal for Higher Education,” seeks to increase graduation statistics to equal the required 60% of the state’s adults obtaining a certificate or degree by 2025.

You don’t have to attend an on-campus program to earn a quality degree or certificate. Online colleges in Missouri offer many of the same educational opportunities through a convenient and accessible online format. By virtue of their flexibility and adjustable pace, such online opportunities can in turn play a large part in the state’s push to improve graduation rates and boost their college educated workforce.

But before we dive into our list of the best online colleges in MS for 2016, let’s start with the state of higher education and online education in particular in Missouri today.
