Comprising some of the best private and public schools in the state, over 100 postsecondary schools in North Carolina offer distance learning programs. North Carolina is also a member of the Southern Region Education Board (SREB), a compact of southeastern states that we will explore in greater detail below.

Before we look at the best online colleges in NC in 2016, let’s consider how both higher education and online education are faring in North Carolina today.

Overview of Higher Education in North Carolina

In 2013, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that North Carolina had 149 degree-granting institutions, broken down as follows: 75 public schools, 49 nonprofits and 25 for-profits. The total number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in the ’12-’13 school year at these schools was: 36,536 at public schools, 14,356 at private nonprofits and 890 at private for-profits.

A recent state-run analysis of higher education’s economic impact on the state made some striking discoveries. For instance, 40% of the state’s workers received some form of education at a community college in-state; their contributions to the economy amounted to $19.6 billion in state income for the ’12-’13 fiscal year. Working graduates from the state’s public university systems, which award 70% of all the state’s degrees, contributed $27.9 billion in state income. Finally, graduates of the 36 schools under the NCICU banner were responsible for $14.2 billion in state income.

Tuition-wise, the College Board found that, in the ’15-’16 school year, the average in-state tuition and fees for four-year public schools was $6,970, while the out-of-state average was $23,010.

As for the state’s financial aid efforts, the National Association of State Student Grant & Aid Programs (NASSGAP) reported that North Carolina awarded $326.5 million in need-based grants and $7.2 million in non-need grants for the ’13-’14 school year. Grants make up 9.2% of the state’s total fiscal support for higher education. The state also awarded $45.2 million in tuition waivers.

Overall, North Carolina has affordable tuition, especially in-state, and awards a large amount of need-based aid. Perhaps one of the reasons why its graduates tend to stay in North Carolina and provide such a positive impact to the state economy.

State of Online Higher Education in North Carolina

North Carolina, like many southern states, has proven to be a committed proponent of online education. The NCES estimates that, as of fall 2012, 6.1% of students enrolled in North Carolina’s Title IV institutions were in fully online programs. Of those, 83% were undergraduates and 91% were living in North Carolina. While these numbers are strong, the most dynamic online efforts are taking place in the state’s community colleges, where, in the 2012-13 school year, approximately 55% of full time enrollments were in distance programs, as reported by the North Carolina Community College System.

The organizations most vocal about online opportunities in North Carolina, both in community colleges and premier universities, are eLearningNC.gov and the NCICU. In 2009, eLearningNC was introduced by Governor Bev Perdue and has since serves as the state’s official online education service. For students at the college level, the site provides a series of resources broken down by institution type, identifying the core online services and distance student benefits at each. The site also maintains a pool of general and North Carolina specific resources that students at online colleges in NC can and should take advantage of.

The NCICU, meanwhile, as previously mentioned, supports 36 private non-profits, 15 of which are identified as having considerable online offerings. The site’s online learning portal directs students to the major opportunities at each.

As for the North Carolina’s membership in the SREB, the compact lets its students sift through an impressive directory of online programs across the southeast U.S. SREB also has services like the Academic Common Market/Electronic Campus and the Regional Contract Program for Health Professions, which let students enroll in a selection of out-of-state programs while paying in-state rates.

Of course, there's more to these calculations than meets the eye. Visit our methodology page to discover the data points that shape our formula and to learn more about the process we use to rank schools.

Most Affordable Online Colleges in North Carolina

Below you’ll find a second ranking of online schools in North Carolina, this time sorted by tuition rate.

Want to know what it takes to make our rankings? Check out our distinct approach.

    Methodology

Our list of the most affordable online colleges is based on in-state yearly tuition, or annual tuition rates if a school does not differentiate between in-state and out-of-state students. Tuition rates are based on a full course load each semester or term. All colleges on the list offer at least one bachelor's degree completion program available entirely online. Those institutions with the lowest tuition are ranked highest, providing prospective students with a true list of the most affordable online colleges in their state.
